Most security cameras you can buy off a shelf come with a quiet catch: your video doesn't actually live with you. It's uploaded to a company's cloud, stored on their servers, accessed under their terms, and unlocked only if you keep paying a monthly fee. You bought the camera, but you're renting access to your own footage.

RamVault does it the other way around. We design and install private, self-hosted camera systems where the recordings are written to storage you own, sitting on your own property, on your own network. No cloud middleman holds your video. No subscription gates your recordings. And here's the part that matters most: once we finish the install and hand it over, you set and control every password. We keep no copy, and we build in no service login of our own. When the system is set up and maintained the way we configure it, access stays in your hands — not a tech company's.

We're a two-person crew — small, local, and hands-on. That means the person who plans your camera placement is the same person running the cable, terminating the connections, and walking you through your system at the end. The mainstream cloud camera model leans on subscriptions: on many popular systems, recorded video history is generally only saved if you're paying an ongoing plan, and without one you're often left with little more than a live view. A self-hosted system removes that dependency entirely.

The install, step by step

  1. Walkthrough and planWe visit your property, talk through your concerns, and map exactly where cameras should go — entries, blind spots, driveways, interior priorities — and where they shouldn't. You'll know what each camera will cover before anything is ordered.
  2. Honest quote and equipment specWe spec the cameras, recorder, and drive sized to the retention you want, plus network gear, and put it all in a clear, itemized quote. No surprise line items, no mandatory subscription buried in the fine print.
  3. Professional installationWe mount the cameras, run and conceal the cabling, set up the recorder and storage on your network, and aim and focus every camera. Clean work, sealed outdoor runs, and a tidy cleanup when we're done.
  4. Private configuration and lockdownWe isolate the cameras and recorder from the public internet, disable cloud-relay features, and — if you want it — set up encrypted remote viewing over your own VPN. Strong passwords and MFA where supported.
  5. Handover and you take the keysYou set every password yourself. We train you on viewing, playback, and exporting clips, hand you the documentation, and leave with no login to your system of our own. From here, the system is yours.

Frequently asked

Can you access my cameras or footage after the install?

By design, we keep no access. At handover, you set the administrator and viewing passwords yourself — we don't keep a copy and we don't build in any service backdoor of our own. The footage lives on your equipment, on your network, behind credentials you hold. Once we leave, we have no login to your system. If you ever want us back for maintenance, you grant access for that visit and can change your passwords the moment we leave.

Where is my video actually stored?

On a hard drive inside a recorder (an NVR) that sits in your home or business — on your property, on your network. It is not uploaded to a manufacturer's cloud or stored on a company's servers. Because the system is configured to record on-premises with cloud and relay features disabled, there's no vendor account sitting between you and your recordings the way there is with cloud cameras — so there's no company login to your footage for an attacker to breach.

Is there a monthly fee?

No mandatory subscription to record or keep your footage. With many mainstream cloud cameras, saved video history generally requires an ongoing paid plan, and without one your recordings often aren't stored at all. A self-hosted system records to your own drive as standard. There are real one-time costs for hardware and installation, and drives eventually need replacing — we're upfront about all of that — but there's no recurring fee for the right to see your own video.

How is this different from a Ring, Nest, or Wyze system?

The core difference is where your footage lives and who controls access. Those ecosystems are cloud-based: video is stored on the vendor's servers, recorded history typically depends on a subscription, and the vendor is a third party whose terms govern access. As documented examples, a 2023 FTC settlement had Ring agree to pay $5.8 million over charges it failed to restrict employee and contractor access to customer videos, and in February 2024 a cross-account glitch let roughly 13,000 Wyze users see thumbnails from other people's cameras. We're not accusing anyone of current wrongdoing — vendor policies change frequently — but the structural point stands: with cloud cameras, a third party holds your footage and sets the access rules; with a self-hosted system, you hold the footage and the keys.

Will my cameras keep recording if my internet goes down?

Yes. Because your cameras record to a local recorder over your own network, they keep recording even with no internet connection. Many cloud-based cameras that rely on uploading to the vendor's servers stop saving video when the internet or Wi-Fi drops, unless they happen to have local or edge storage. A self-hosted system records to its own on-site drive, so it keeps recording during an outage — which makes it more dependable when the connection isn't.

Can I still check my cameras from my phone when I'm away?

Yes, if you want to. We set up remote viewing the private way — through a VPN running on your own router or a small device on your network — so your phone connects directly to your system over an encrypted tunnel you control. Your video never routes through a manufacturer's cloud to reach you. If you'd rather keep it viewable only inside the building, that's a great option too, and we'll set it up that way.

What about law enforcement or legal requests for my footage?

With cloud cameras, the vendor is a third party that can be served legal demands for footage it holds. Some major cloud camera vendors have also publicly described policies allowing them to disclose footage to law enforcement in emergencies as they define them, and their terms can change over time. With a self-hosted system, your footage isn't sitting on a vendor's servers — so a request for it would come to you, the owner, rather than to a company holding a copy. You stay in the decision.

Do you guarantee the system can never be hacked?

No, and we won't pretend otherwise — any company that promises an "unhackable" camera is overselling. What we do is reduce risk the right way: keeping your cameras and recorder isolated from the public internet, disabling cloud-relay features, using strong passwords and MFA where supported, and giving you sole control of credentials. The honest, defensible claim is about data location, ownership, and control — your footage stays on your hardware, under your keys, when the system is set up and maintained the way we configure it.
