About 71% of Iowa homes test above the EPA's action level — the highest share of any state — and every county is a high-radon zone. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in people who don't smoke.

New builds, by law

Iowa's HF82 (effective July 1, 2026) requires a passive radon system in every new single-family home and duplex before it's sold. Done during the build it's a few hundred dollars — far less than a retrofit.

"New homes don't have radon."

Radon comes from the soil, so a brand-new house can test high from the start. That's exactly why Iowa now requires a radon system in new homes.

"My neighbor tested low, so I'm fine."

Levels vary from house to house, even next door. The only way to know your number is to test your own home.

"No basement, no problem."

Slab-on-grade and crawl-space homes can have high radon too. It gets in anywhere the house touches the soil.

"I'd smell it if it were there."

Radon has no color, smell, or taste. Testing is the only way to find it.

"Fixing it is a huge job."

A typical active system is a sealed pipe and a quiet fan that pull radon from under the slab and vent it above the roof. Systems can cut radon by up to 99%, and most homes get to 2 pCi/L or less.
